Simply Green Quick Tip: DIY Kitchen Prevention

Smelly garbage disposal? Keep it clean by tossing lemon wedges (use ‘em after you’ve squeezed out the juice for salad dressing or homemade lemonade) and a cup of ice down the drain and flipping on the switch. As it whirls away, the ice will sharpen the blades and the lemons will disinfect. How easy is that?

Thanks for the lemon/ice tip…our disposal has been rather funky lately. Sorry that I do not have a tip to pass along, but I will check back often to see the ideas others leave.

On the rare occasions that I use my microwave, I use a microwave-safe dish (such as a plate or bowl) to cover the dish of food. It prevents splashing of food on my microwave, and it is a great replacement to plastic wrap which can’t be very good for our bodies or the environment.

To get the shiniest faucet ever, I wet a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol. It always leaves the faucet streak free and crazy shiny.

Using a pumice stone on toilet rings works great!
P.S. I avoid using our garbage disposal since it taxes the water system. (See Bill Nye’s “Stuff Happens,” “Kitchen” episode.)

I use white vinegar as a carpet cleaner. It’s great for getting out pet smells! Just spray it all over and use your shampoo-vac. =)

Before cooking fresh produce and before eating fresh fruits, I always rinse them in a vinegar and water mixture. Add 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar to 1 pint water and use to wash fresh fruits and vegetables, then rinse thoroughly. Research has shown that vinegar helps kill bacteria on fruits and vegetables. :)

I use a mixture of vinager water to clean my glass and mirrors. They are spotless and there is no glare. I also use vinager when I bathe my dog, it helps with her skin when she has a skin irritation and flea control.
