Simply Green Quick Tip: Waste Not, Want Water

simply_green_logo6

Time to water the plants? As your morning shower heats up, fill a watering can with the cold water before it goes down the drain. Let the water come to room temperature and give your thirsty plants a soaking (plants prefer tepid water to bone-chilling cold H2O). What’s that, you don’t have a houseplant? Then go pick one up, because it can help purify the air in your home by filtering out toxins. Foolproof, hard-to-kill varieties include the spider plant and succulents.

PS- Which houseplant do you think is the easiest to care for? Share it here and I just might send you a JCPenney Simply Green tote bag as my way of saying thanks!

I find that this is a good way to use the ‘reclaimed’ water for our dehumidifier too! As I look around my computer room, I see FOUR - all Christmas Cactus, so they get my vote!!

  2. Dani says:

Jade plants are easy to grow. They don’t need a lot of water or attention. Just some sunlight, and an occasional soaking of water.

  3. Sarah says:

Ivy plants are the easiest! The only one I can keep alive :)

  4. Becky C says:

Devil’s ivy is the easiest for me. It needs very little light, very little water and has great leaves to look at.

  5. Lisa says:

Aloe! It doesn’t need to be watered more than about once a week, can survive in indirect sunlight, plus its sap is good on sunburn and rashes. It’s definitely my favorite plant to grow.

  6. jk says:

Violets. You honestly just about have to ignore them for them to do well.

  7. Jennifer says:

Philodendron has always been the easiest houseplant for me to grow.

  8. Sally says:

I agree with jk, Put an African Violet in a basically northern window, water it once a week and you get flowers almost non-stop. So many variations in blossom colors and leaf colors, ruffled , or not and if you keep putting them in larger pots, they grow larger.

my vote is for the aloe vera plant-needs little water, and if you burn yourself ,break off a piece and treat the burn with the soothing gel that oozes out

  10. Valerie says:

    Lucky Bamboo

The easiest plant to care for that I own is probally the Christmas Cactus. An easy watering tip for outdoor potted plants is: before refilling the dog’s water bowl, we empty her bowl into the potted plants before with give her a fresh bowl of H2o.

  12. patty says:

Ficus. All you do is water and they grow.

  13. LaShaune says:

peace (Easter) lillies are the easiest. they let you know when they need water with their droopy leaves. soak it and the leaves perk back up. I’ve left 2 of them out in the heat (leaves burnt to a crisp) but added water and some plant fertilizer and they came right back.

  14. Lee says:

spider plants are pretty easy to take care of.

  15. Linda J. says:

Coleus. Mine has been around forever and has stayed healthy through long periods of “forgetfulness”. Very forgiving and still growing strong.

  16. Chris P says:

Philodendrom and lucky canes. Not even neglect from me kills them.

  17. Stacey says:

The “Step Mother’s Tongue” or “Snake plant”… I forget the actual name. Another plant I love and is easy to grow is the Colocasia or “Black Magic Elephant Ear”. All it needs is a sunny window (or patio) and water. It produces new leaves like fireworks! If you live near the Marketplace at Del Val College, they have a great selection of indoor plants. I just bought a Banana plant from them and it’s growing like crazy with little help from me…. I like that!

I’ve had great success with my Bamboo Palm. I don’t even water it on a regular basis and it does well. I believe it is ranked as the #2 (or 3?) best air-purifying plant in the book “How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office.” I’ve had mine over 2 years now, along with the Peace Lilly (another great one!) and I don’t have the greenest thumb. ;)

  19. Jessica says:

I have lots of bags, so I don’t need one, but I wanted to say that I think an Aloe is the easiest to care for.

  20. viviana says:

I’m not the best with plants, but I would agree with the spider plant.

  21. maria says:

pothos! needs little water, little light, and little love…not that I don’t give it any!

  22. Heidi says:

Spider plant. I read somewhere that it’s a very good air-cleaning plant (I guess it processes a lot of CO2 and emits a lot of oxygen), and you can honestly just grow it in a bowl of water, though it does better in dirt.

  23. CAGirlInCO says:

I have to have plants that survive my watering style, which is that I only water them when replacing the dog water or with my bedside water leftover from the night before. I rotate around watering the plants on different days or whichever looks the driest. To my surprise the plants that have survived the best are tropical plants: christmas cactus, bromeliads, palms, orchids and canes. They require very little water and survive quite happily indoors. Granted, the orchids are in the bathroom, so they get “steamed” each morning.

  24. Jacky says:

Snake plants are pretty indestructible. Plus, they look pretty neat.

  25. Tara says:

I have a green and white spider plant-it grows like a weed. I pulled off a bunch of shoots and replanted them-and there are alreay a bunch more.

  26. Frank says:

Transitioning to florescent lighting throughout your house might be intially expensive, but the pay off is a longer lasting bulb and a cost savings in electricity of over 30% over all. The environment loves this idea as well…..

  27. Amy A says:

My bamboo plant that i have had for 6 years…has grown so tall with very little effort (but lots of love)

  28. Elyse says:

Spider plants are almost definitely the easiest to take care of! Keeping a plant or two in your bathroom will help to absorb moisture which means less humidity, less potential for mold, and less need to use a fan/electricity!

  29. pat says:

My favorite plant is the palm lily. Lots of water and lots of sunshine mixed with a bit of TLC and thats it

  30. pat says:

My favorite plant is the peace lily. Lots of water and lots of sunshine mixed with a bit of TLC and thats it

  31. Toni Otto says:

I save the water from my rain bucket and from boiling eggs. The most successful plant that I have ever had was a Hindu Rope Plant (Hoya Carnosa Compacta). Takes very little water, leave it alone and it will produce a wonderful flower that looks like it is a wax or plastic flower that was put on your plant over night.
